In the case of the  rise of the going to-future, a spatial movement is used to express movement in time:

be going [to visit Bill] > [be going to] visit Bill >

[be going to] like Bill. (Hopper and Traugott 2003: 93)

(1) French aller ‘go’:
Je vais faire mes courses.

‘I am going (to go) shopping.’
(2) French venir ‘come’
Je viens de faire mes courses.

‘I am (just) coming back from doing my shopping.’
