The Craft of Transformation

The Craft of Transformation

In his masterclass at the IGS Festival, British character actor Bertie Carvel offered rare insights into the foundation of his craft. From his humble beginnings in Cub Scout theater to iconic portrayals such as Tony Blair or investigator Adam Dalgliesh in Dalgliesh, he revealed himself to be an actor who views his art not as self-expression, but as a radical search for truth.

Carvel laid the groundwork for his career early on, albeit unconsciously. Ten years of intensive live-action role-playing, where he lived out invented identities in complex fantasy worlds on a weekly basis, were followed by a late leap onto professional stages.

As Oscar Wilde aptly noted: „Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.“

For Carvel himself, physical prosthetics like custom-fitted teeth or historical costumes are not mere accessories, but essential tools. Instead of intellectual methodology, physical training takes center stage for him. The external form, whether it is Donald Trump’s jawline or the diction of a British Prime Minister, shapes the “inner body” and prepares the actor for the creative marathon performance.

While theater thrives on the immediate, kinesthetic feedback of the audience, the palpable, electric “glow” of attention in the room, the film actor operates in an often sterile environment. On film sets, it is crucial to compensate for this lost energy through absolute presence in the moment.

Nevertheless, Carvel champions a measured rhythm. Formats like Dalgliesh prove that audiences are ready for “slow burn” narratives where less is spoken and observation is all the more precise. The secret to good acting, according to Carvel, is both paradoxical and simple: direct your attention radically toward your scene partner, take the focus off yourself, and the audience will be captivated all on their own.

Shaped by a politically alert university period, Carvel views almost every role as a political act. Whether as a fictional detective, a Shakespearean-style Trump, or a historical mastermind, the focus is always on psychological archaeology. In the end, what remains is the realization of a craftsman who, despite all his successes, has retained his childhood curiosity: good storytelling cannot be displaced by shrinking attention spans or technological change. Stories will endure as long as artists are willing to lose themselves in them unconditionally.
